Farmers - CA umbrella insurance questions - how to make it affordable with a youthful driver?
This year, my Farmers umbrella policy for 2 mil coverage premium increased from 1000/year to 3880/year. We are in California. Have umbrella/home/auto (2 cars, 2 drivers) with Farmers.
My son is 22 and has an accident on his record from 2.5 years ago. He has his own car titled in his name. His car is insured on my policy.
What would you do to lower the umbrella insurance cost? I am really struggling here.
If he gets his own car insurance, can I be sued for an accident he causes since he is a dependent on my taxes?
Thank you for any ideas.
Nationwide - Nationwide vs costco/Figo pet insurance
I am debating between nationwide and costco pet insurance for my new 8 month goldendoodle puppy. Figo is $40 cheaper than nationwide.
Nationwide is $93 a month 80% coverage $250 deductible. Figo is $53 a month 80% coverage with $250 dedutlctable.
i have had nationwide for my older dog who got chemo treatments and front leg amputated 3 years ago and they covered 90% with $250 deductible. I've had 90% coverage for 8 years untill 2 months ago. Nationwide sent me a letter saying they were cutting coverage from 90% to 50% for my 12 year old dog.
AKC Insurance - SCAMMED by AKC insurance
We thought we were purchasing Breed specific insurance, Paid extra over basic coverage ever since my Rottweiler was puppy. 2 years $88 a month. Now when we needed to put in a claim 6K for TPLO (ACL fix) they claim our cap is $500 and thats that. How does that even make sense? We paid $2K to be capped at $500. This insurance is a scam! I want everyone to know
Progressive - Progressive requiring I agree to arbitration to answer questions
I was rear-ended on the freeway (not merging, just came to a stop in traffic and the guy behind me... didn't stop). We exchanged info, I got an estimate from a bodyshop, he opened a claim with his insurance (a Progressive subsidiary). I also alerted my insurance that there had been an accident but did not open a claim. Now I got a message from Progressive asking me to answer questions about the accident. I know them asking for an account of the accident or even coming out to see my car is standard - but they require me to agree to arbitration and a bunch of other terms before even seeing what the questions are. I have no confirmation that the other driver filed the claim assuming fault for the accident so agreeing to all of Progressive's terms seems wrong before having more information. I would be fine emailing photos, my info, and an account of the accident to an agent but the other driver says he doesn't have the info of the agent assigned to the claim. Is it all automated to the point where there is no person that I can communicate with outside of this form?
State Farm - Getting low ACV from state farm. Can I do anything?
It's a 2022 Genesis g70 RWD fully loaded prestige package and they offered me 31500. Kelly Blue book gives 31500-36000. Is it worth hiring an appraiser to raise the price? The adjuster doesn't seem to want to budge.
Progressive - Policy ceded to reinsurance facility with clean driving record
My auto insurance policy with Progressive was ceded to the North Carolina Reinsurance Facility. I have a clean driving record, no accidents, no tickets, no nothing in the 15 years I've been driving, but they told me that ALL of their policies in North Carolina were ceded after Hurricane Helene -- even though I don't live in Western NC. I've always carried coverage well above the minimum but my coverages are of course going to decrease significantly and my premium has gone up by a lot, as well.
I'd like to switch companies, but I'm wondering if this has happened with policies across the board in NC regardless of company and that now that I've had a policy ceded, anywhere I switch will automatically do that, as well. Can anyone clarify how this works? Any other NC drivers run into this with other companies since Hurricane Helene?
I really hope I'm not out of luck and can no longer get coverage above the minimum anywhere. I'm happy to switch companies if needed, but I also bundle with
Trupanion - Tartar - Pre-Existing Condition
Hi everyone. I brought my 5 and 9 month old kittens for a wellness exam this morning to show there are no pre-existing conditions to Trupanion. The vet ended up noting that there was a very small amount of tartar on just one tooth of each cat, and it was so mild she didn’t even know if it was just food residue or tartar. It also took her multiple tries to even see it. She did however note that the dental score for my cats are both 0, meaning there is no sign of disease or tartar (?).
Trupanion is now saying that for the rest of my cats lives, any dental issues (other than accidental breaks) won’t be covered since it is a pre-existing condition. I’m at a loss for what to do… I know cats often need extractions and I chose Trupanion for their dental coverage. It is so frustrating that because of that one finding that was so mild, nothing will be covered.
Does anyone have any experience with this and any advice? I’ve read somewhere that someone had their vet write a note saying it was not a pre-existing condition. Has anyone else heard of this?
Hertz - Hertz Rental Car overcharged me, then sent the disputed amount to collections. Help please!
Tl;Dr: Hertz overcharged me when renting a car. After customer service could not help, I opened a dispute, but on the wrong charge as I'm dumb. The dispute was closed and money returned to Hertz. Now they have sent multiple invoices requesting payment for this charge, and as of March 5 it has been sent to collections.
Hey!
So back in August 2024 I rented a car with some friends, to be picked up in San Francisco and returned to Las Vegas. We booked online and chose the extra insurance and have a layout of all charges in the initial email. We paid $350 CAD when booking. When picking up the car, we also added a secondary driver. The remaining $1680 was to be billed to the card already on file.
When the email came through after picking up the car, I saw it was about $230 CAD above what I expected, but I assumed this was a damage deposit or something of the like. When we returned the car however, the final invoice was still about $230 above what I expected based on the initial booking invoice, plus the additional driver. This is also taking into account the charge for dropping off at a different location, the extra insurance, etc that was all listed in the initial email. Unfortunately, we dropped off the car late at night and flew home the next day, so there was no staff in the office to speak to.
Fast forward a couple weeks, the two charges were posted and still remained, collectively, about $230 above what I was quoted, including the extras we chose. So I called Hertz. Customer support couldn't see any issue, but also said there was no manager present to speak to. They put in a request with their financial team to contact me. I was never contacted. A couple days later, I called again, and met the same result. I should have been more aggressive and demanded to talk to someone who actually knew how to look an invoice, but I didn't. Again I got them to request an email from the financial team. This time I did get an email from them, to which I replied and explained the situation.. And never heard back.
At this point, I just opened a dispute with my credit card. Unfortunately, I still wasn't sure which exact payment was overcharged, so I opened the dispute on the initial booking fee of $350. This means that this amount is refunded back to me temporarily, pending the final results of the dispute. In hindsight, that was obviously not the way to go, but at the time I assumed they just didn't subtract the booking deposit from the final bill. However, this was incorrect, and by mid December, after Hertz replied to my bank, it was deemed to be incorrect as the overcharge had nothing to do with the booking deposit. The $350 was returned to Hertz on December 13th. They already have the money. However, in mid-January, I received an invoice in the mail from Hertz detailing that I owed $350, with an invoice date of December 29th. So two weeks after the money was already returned.
Prior to this letter, I also called Hertz yet again, and finally got someone who felt sympathetic and refunded me the $230 I was overcharged. This was done through official channels as he sent the request to their financial team. I wish this had been the result at the beginning, but unfortunately here we are.
Now I stupidly ignored this first invoice letter because I assumed that once their financial team did a year end balancing of accounts, the disputed amount of $350 would be seen to have been refunded back in December, and I just wouldn't hear from them again. However, that was not the case, I got another couple letters from Hertz.
Two weeks ago, I emailed the address listed on this Hertz invoice, and explained, in rather pissed off terms I confess, the entire situation, and that the money had already been returned to Hertz. I made sure to iterate multiple times that they already had the money back that they were requesting. I got an email a few days later notifying me that my email had been forwarded to the Hertz collections team. I never heard any confirmation back from them.
Now, today I received a letter in the mail from a collections agency stating that they have been given the charge and I have 3 days to pay or contact the office or it would be placed against my credit rating. However, this letter was mailed on March 5. And I checked the mail yesterday. It just got here today, 7 days passed their letter date.
What is the best course of actions here? Realistically it probably isn't productive to hire an attorney to deal with a $350 collections charge. I will be calling the collections office today of course. But I wanted to get some advice from the fine people on here. I do not want my credit rating to be damaged.
UPDATE: Spoke with the collections agent who handled this, and she hadn't gotten to processing my case yet. So my credit is safe for now. I sent her my credit statements as proof that the charge has been paid back to Hertz. She'll update me later after she forwards this to Hertz.
If anyone has advice for how to handle this if for some reason Hertz doesn't back down, I would greatly appreciate it. Is it just a safer option to pay this charge, even if that means double paying them, rather than go through all the legal hassle? Like yes it's about the principle of not letting a company walking all over you with no recourse, but at the end of the day, I don't want to hurt my credit rating or have to deal with thousands in legal fees with no guarantee it'll be covered if Hertz settled.
Odie - Transition from ManyPets to Odie – Feeling Overcharged, What Should I Do?
I was previously with ManyPets and paid about $64/month for my pet’s insurance. Now that ManyPets has discontinued its US operations, my policy is being transitioned to Odie. However, under this transition I’m forced to pay $71/month for a plan that only offers a $20k annual limit at 90% reimbursement.
What makes it worse is that new Odie Direct customers can get a policy for $37/month with a $40k annual limit—but of course, switching to that means starting a new policy (with waiting periods and loss of coverage for pre-existing conditions).
I had no say in this change, and I’m feeling like I’m being unfairly charged more for lower benefits. Has anyone else experienced something similar?
• Is there any legal angle or consumer protection law that might help contest these changes?
• Should I try negotiating further with Odie or consider switching to Odie Direct despite the downsides?
• What have your experiences been in situations like this?
Any insights, advice, or similar stories would be greatly appreciated!
H.P. - Older Portuguese Water Dogs with pre-existing conditions and current pet insurance is beaucoup expensive and incompetent. Am I stuck?
**TL;DR - old dogs, medical history, am I stuck with my current insurer?** (that doesn't add any info to the title of the post but oh well. And yes this post is too long)
I have two Portuguese Water Dogs, a [10 year old black curly male ](https://imgur.com/wFUAoUd)and an [8 year old brown curly female](https://imgur.com/xHxNAZn). As older purebred dogs, they've been to the vet once or twice ;-)
[Besties](https://imgur.com/sPSnlRh) (and cousins)
My dogs have been insured with the same company (H.P.) from as soon as they were eligible as puppies - 8 weeks plus the obligatory waiting period. I would love to be able to leave this company as they have become quite expensive, and their incompetence processing claims for us is truly staggering. They reflexively reject claims as "not covered office visit" when the claims are not for office visits. My dogs recently ate raisin bread (ugghhhh) and so there are a lot of vet bills and it's been three times now they've done the exact same rejection pattern - despite my calling in and saying "you've rejected correct claims before, can you please process these correctly". Apparently they can't. They are owned by a billion dollar company (Chubb) and I guess they need my money for the CEO's granddaughter's golf lessons or something. Maybe it's not intentionally trying to rip me off. But if that's not it then they've been unbelievably incompetent. Which is worse??
Of course I have no idea what the future holds for these dogs - whether they'll need care for preexisting conditions or not (or for something that the insurance **says** is a pre-existing condition.) The older boy had a mysterious illness as a puppy so that is in his record (though from another vet in another state, maybe it wouldn't ever be found); he's had positive Lyme titers on more than one occasion; and he had acute kidney injury (based on his creatinine) from the raisin incident that may or may not have resolved. The girl never showed abnormal values from the raisins but got IV fluid treatment so it's in her record. She also has been seen for recurrent UTIs that are controlled with special food that controls her urine pH.
Backstory is We previously had two PWDs
[D & B](https://imgur.com/WN920VF), ten years before D died of cancer
and one of them ended up in the ER and as the result of a complete medical and administrative dumpster fire, we ended up spending low five figures to keep her alive AFTER the vet practice KNEW she was completely riddled with pancreatic cancer. (Dog medical stuff is no fun!) We had to take out a loan from one of those companies that has brochures on the reception desk of vets, plus put a lot on credit cards. :-(
After that experience we resolved we'd insure our new dogs and went with HP because they had no lifetime limit, and we didn't want to have to make a dollar decision on a dog's life. Also at that time I don't think HP was owned by Chubb (?) They seemed like a small soulful outfit out of Seattle and genuinely wanted to provide a service to pet owners. I may be wrong about that though. At any rate Chubb owns them nowand probably the original owners are enjoying their retirement in a 7000 square foot mansion in Bali built entirely from reclaimed Indonesian teak temples. But I digress.
So - I'm stuck with my existing insurance? Pre-existing conditions seem to be ixnay for the pet insurance industry (for reasons amply explained in this sub), and if there are any loopholes or allowances it seems like my dogs are exhibit A for not fitting through.
Thoughts / insights / advice / comments on how cute my dogs are, much appreciated.
