Blue Cross Blue Shield - Friend in Texas in a serious predicament due to sudden loss of in-network doctors
My friend in Texas lost her job a year ago and has been on BCBS healthcare through the market place. She suffers from a severely resistant rheumatoid arthritis and her biologics also caused her serious side effects of gut dysmotility and weak immune system.
Just yesterday, she told me that she lost all access to her PCP , gasteroenterologist, orthopedic surgeon and psychiatrist, all of which are part of Southwestern Texas Health resources that have been battling withy BCBS over the contracts and stuff. She is applying for jobs left and right but we know how bad job markets are right now.
What on earth is she supposed to do? All the doctors she has been seeing are out of network in other available health care plans.
insurance company - Big Payouts
After all these years, it still grinds my gears. A truck carrying drilling waste accidentally went into the wrong farmer's field, and sprayed a tiny bit of it on the alfalfa field, before the driver realized his mistake. I was called in to analyze the soil test data and write a report and recommendations. The tests showed salinity deep in the soil profile, that couldn't have possibly come from the drilling waste, and I said so in my report. I was called to a meeting with the insurance adjuster and had to endure a thorough dressing down for it (by a British accent no less) and made to look the fool in front of my peers. The insurance company was far more inclined to spend dozens of millions to excavate all the soil and have it replaced instead. That was my first inkling that insurance companies don't really want to avoid big payouts; they use them to justify raising their premiums.
Liberty Mutual - Insurer offering ~10% of repair cost
This is my first rodeo with homeowner’s insurance (Liberty Mutual) and it’s a nightmare. Looking for advice on how to proceed. The backstory is that a local company installed a new appliance in my home and bungled it. Their mistake caused some water damage to my kitchen and major damage in the finished room directly below. The appliance company gave information for their insurer, but when the initial water remediation was done and uncovered the extent of the damage, I filed a homeowner’s insurance claim instead and figured they would subrogate.
I currently have a wall in my kitchen down to the studs with some cabinet boxes, trim, and the dishwasher removed and sitting in my sunroom. The counter is being held up by a piece of scrap wood. There are some minor signs of gapping in the hardwood floor that is usually hidden from view, so I’m hoping to let it ride. Meanwhile the room beneath the kitchen is uninhabitable. One wall is down to the studs with no insulation (exterior wall), LVP flooring removed, and holes in the ceiling from water remediation equipment. I received a repair estimate from a local contractor for $25k (HCOL area, home value approaching $1mil). This includes insulation, sheet rock, plaster, paint, baseboards and trim, ceiling repair, LVP flooring downstairs to replace what was there, reinstall of existing cabinet boxes, and plumbing. It does not include new cabinets or counters.
My claim with Liberty has been in process for 8 weeks and a field adjuster came out 2 weeks ago with radio silence since then. The contractor has also been contacting Liberty for updates. Liberty called today and said the field adjuster calculated $700 to repair the kitchen and $2300 to repair downstairs for a total of $3k. I understand it’s an initial offer and figured I won’t come out of this without burning cash of my own, but it doesn’t cover the cost of materials let alone labor. And there’s not even a guarantee that my custom cabinets and counters will come out the other side looking the same.
What do I do from here? Do I eat $20k up front and turn around and sue the appliance company to be made whole? I thought that was why I had homeowner’s insurance but this is a real nightmare. And to top it off I’ll be adding a newborn to the mix in less than 8 weeks with my house in shambles and no dishwasher (first world problems, I know).
NYSI - What does car insurance pay for after an injury? NYS
I got hit by a car last summer in NYS and was told by my lawyer that they’d reimburse for taxis (up to $25/day) and personal help needed around the home and stuff.
I kept all my receipts including for things like a walker, shoe lift, etc (I only got crutches through the doctor).
Now the insurance company won’t reimburse any of it because they said:
1- they only cover taxis to doctors appointments
2- they don’t cover laundry because that is “personal”
3- they won’t cover any medical things because I didn’t have a prescription for them.
These probably are the rules and I’m mad that my lawyer didn’t actually tell me this before and told me the opposite because I probably could have gotten a prescription for those items. But I want to make sure.

community public liability insurance - Settled claim privately, Insurance won't let me claim
Brief background:
My boss lives in a private gated community. Last week a resident neighbour was driving out of the grounds, and as she was going through the gate one of our staff walked in front of the gate. I honestly don't know what happened but her car was damaged as the gate closed on her car.
The neighbour said our team member was at fault. The gate mechanism is absolutely faulty and to blame. My boss said just to settle it and we paid her 1k for the damage (she got a garage quote).
Now the community public liability insurance is saying that because we amicably settled with the Third Party, no claim by us will be entertained.
I know that by rights the neighbour should have claimed on the community insurance, but my boss just wanted it dealt with and didn't want animosity with a neighbour.
Do we have any recourse with the insurance company?
My next plan will be legal action against the property managers, but I'd prefer not to go down that road!
Edit: spelling
Trumpanion - Overwhelming options
I was hopping someone could help me. My family is adopting a puppy this April and we want to get insurance coverage for it. I have read reviews online and here and it seems like people don’t like most companies because, shockingly, insurance companies don’t want to pay up. So I guess what I’m asking is does anyone have a recommendation for a company that reliably pays claims? I’m not too concerned about reimbursement times a month is fine, but I just don’t want to get scammed. It seems Trumpanion is very popular but also is 2x the cost of everyone else, To the tune of 1200 a year.
It seems from the research I have done, Lemonaid, Figo, Fetch and Met Life have plans I could work with. Fetch being the cheapest and covering initial visits which is cool
But concerning that it’s so cheap.
Also is 10,000 annual coverage sufficient? I live in Seattle suburbs and have no idea what stuff costs.
Thanks for any insight you all might have.
LA Care - LA Care refusing to pay ER visit
During december this year, I had to go to the ER for a kidney infection while visiting family in Wisconsin.
I'm in California and have had LA Care since I turned 26 and was kicked off my mother's insurance (Blue Cross/ Blue Shield Missisippi) I'm 28 now.
LA Care is now saying that they were never my primary insurance, and that BCBS is my primary, so the responsibility of the bill falls onto them and me.
I had a surgery 2 years ago that was covered by LA Care.
I have contacted BCBS to ensure that my insurance is not still active with them, and it isn't. I three-wayd a phone call with representatives from both LA Care and BCBS to make sure the issue resolved.
Ive been calling LA Care since early this year to have them remove BCBS as my primary since I no longer have it, but as of yesterday, they still haven't removed it, and are still listed as my secondary insurance.
The hospital in Wisconsin and billing me over 6k. I can't afford that, and was under the impression I'd not be billed since a kidney infection is classified as an emergency under LA Care's policy.
I don't know what to do. I'd appreciate any insight on this situation, LA Care is being incredibly unhelpful, and refuses to even let me submit an appeal.
LA Care also covered a surgery I had 2 years ago. I was never aware they weren't my primary insurance.
Medica - Insurance not fully covering room and board after birth
I live in Minnesota where insurance companies are required to cover 48 hours of inpatient care after a vaginal birth. https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/62A.0411#:~:text=Every%20health%20plan%20must%20provide,a%20mother%20and%20her%20newborn.
My insurance (Medica) is trying to make me pay $1850 of the $8300 billed to them for room and board after I gave birth. The stay was less than 48 hours. Is this legal? Do I have a course of action here?
