Fetch - Any pet insurance recommendations for a 9 year old lab mix ?
I was on fetch but they have increased my rates a lot since I first joined when my dog was 4. Started at $60/month now I’m at $200/month despite never making a claim. I’ve read that fetch is a scam, but then again I’ve also read embrace and trupanion are scams as well. Does anyone have any insurance recommendations that are actually decent? She is in good health, thankfully, but as she gets older I want to still make sure she is covered, just in case.
FIGO - FIGO Costco pet insurance
FIGO Costco pet insurance. I’ve been paying $133 a month for a healthy dog. They literally only pay $50 a year toward vaccinations. I went ahead and cancelled. I just can’t justify such poor assistance for these expensive vaccinations. His vaccinations and annual checkup is $300. I am considering setting up a savings account dedicated for my dog. I should have read the fine print.
Pets Best - Switching with Pre-existing Conditions, Acupuncture. Pets Best to Physicians Mutual?
Hello kind community. I am trying to make a decision for our 7.5 year old sweetheart.
So, we have been on Pet's Best since she was young as my wife was able to get a discount through her employer.
At 5yo, our dog suffered a bout of IVDD stage 4 and needed a hemilaminectomy surgery. (came in to something like 14k and we maxed out our 5k coverage.) The surgery went great and she recovered relatively quickly with the help of a lot of alternative therapies. Unfortunately, when we signed on for Pets Best, we did not opt for RAC care (rehab, acupuncture, chiro) We didnt even know this was an option at the time, it would have been a massive help had we had the RAC, so tip - OPT FOR IT no matter what, or make sure your provider covers this. Pets do SO well with "alternative therapy".
Since the IVDD, we have been regularly seen by a vet who specializes in holistic offerings. She receives acupuncture and laser therapy and it keeps her in really great shape. She is about 80% to where she was pre-IVDD, but if we go to long without the acupuncture, her mobility dips some. These visits cost about $275 each.
She also developed an eye condition (Keratitis & Keratopathy) about a year and a half ago, and has been seen by an eye specialist to reverse and retard the condition with eyedrops with great success. At this point they only want to see her 1x/year. Latest note from this vet reads "She has no active keratitis, controlled (if anything, improved) corneal pigmentation, and is otherwise normal on exam." Pets best has been paying our claims for these visits.
The only other claim we've submitted was for getting a foxtail pulled out of her ear canal.

So, Pets Best sent us a notice of a 2x increase in our premium, leading us to look in to switching to see if we could get something better. Through this wonderful community I came across Physicians Mutual and am feeling like it will be a better option, and that even if we end up paying more we could be in better hands.
My fear, however, is that in the switch, anything related to her eyes will be seen as pre-existing. It would be great to get that yearly eye specialist covered but I understand that it may not be if its related to the keratitis. But in the future if she develops cataracts, ulcers, etc in her eye, could it be denied?
**My main question**, is related to her mobility upkeep. Would we be able to get acupuncture + laser covered under alternative therapy, as "preventative care" instead of having it tied to the IVDD? Its unclear in Physicians Mutual's documentation how they provide/decide for alternative care. She has not had any incidents related to IVDD in 2.5 years, but there is always a risk that it could show in another area of her spine later.
Does anyone here use Physicians Mutual for Acupuncture, or has anyone here successfully added RAC care to their Pet's Best policy post-incident? I feel that even without her history, as she ages we would be opting for regular acupuncture and laser as her primary preventative care.
Any insight is greatly appreciated, thanks everyone.
State Farm - 81-year-old father's car hit by city trash truck
My dad's car was hit by a city trash truck in upstate New York. He was stopped at an intersection and it hit him as it completed a turn onto the road he was on. He was not injured, thank god.
My dad was driving an old (2006) SUV that was still in great shape with low miles that he adored. The front bumper and fender on the driver's side is smashed but it is still technically drivable. His insurance (State Farm) is offering him $4100 to surrender the car, or just over $3,000 if he wants to keep it as owner retained salvage.
My dad is very upset because he loves this SUV and feels like he should be made whole since this accident wasn't his fault at all. I think the amount they're offering is generous given the age of the car and I've explained this to him. He wants to keep it and fix it himself (restoring cars is his hobby). But it looks like NY will still assign this a salvage title and he thinks this is unfair.
Does he have any other options here? He did not get a rental car as State Farm suggested but has been driving his brother's car instead. He has taken time off his part-time job to deal with this situation, so I suggested he add up the time off work plus any mileage and gas bought for his brother's car and tell State Farm about this too.
He's just really upset and I'd like to help him with tips on anything else he can do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Priority Health - Priority Health: how is "$2000 out of pocket" not "$2000 out of pocket"?
So my son receives ABA services through a tier 1 provider. This goes through deductible and coinsurance. $650 individual deductible, $2000 coinsurance (minus prescription and copay, solely for him, the numbers mentioned don't apply to family deductible). $0 is covered until the $650 is hit, 80% is covered until $2000 is hit, then 100% covered after.
So I call up insurance because last year's bills are much higher than expected. I don't even know the total yet for just last year. And I can't look at the online EOBs yet until tomorrow.
So, $650 is covered very quickly. Then there's a $6000 bill (for one date of service) sent to insurance. 80% is covered, we cover 20%. This is where I get so confused. Apparently because the first day wasn't processed first ($11,000) and this $6000 was processed first, she said we are actually paying so much less money overall for the year. We have to pay for the 20%... But it doesn't sound like it counts towards the $2000? We might be paying a total of $4,000-$5,000 once this is all said and done.
It went like this...
"So if I've already paid the $2,000 towards ABA, why do I have to pay over that?"
"Because you're responsible for 20% after the $650 is paid until you reach the $2,000. You're actually paying so much less because that $11,000 wasn't processed first, so you're coming out on top. Otherwise you would have had to pay $2,2000."
My brain hurts. I don't know what's going on. That would have put me over the $2,000 and it sounded like he still wouldn't have been considered as reaching the $2,000....
Someone please explain 😭
HealthyPaws - HealthyPaws: Insane Premium Increases Since Moving to Pennsylvania
Do they not regulate, or loosely regulate, pet insurance premiums in Pennsylvania? I started a string on a cat Facebook group asking people to note their cats age, healthypaws premium, and city/state. To my surprise, someone with a cat in NYC at a similar age was paying way less than me.
For reference, my cat just turned 19 and my ~60 day notice says my premium is going up from ~$380/month to ~$650/month. I don't think I have the option to switch insurance providers since my cat has a lot of health issues we are managing. Most plans do not cover pre-existing conditions.
Can people post their healthypaws premiums below if they own a cat, inclusive of the age of your cat, city and state?
For those who live in Pennsylvania, are you also seeing crazy increases? If there is a pattern of Pennsylvania being the outlier here, I can draft a letter to the Department of Insurance and the Attorney General.
Note: My premiums for my cat when she was about 17 and in Phoenix, Arizona, were ~$150/month.
Blue Cross Blue Shield - BCBS denied iron infusion
Location: Michigan
At a loss here. Just received a statement from my health care provider that BCBS denied my iron infusion from January and that I owe $11,000.
I had iron deficient anemia during my pregnancy and iron pills didn’t do anything to raise my levels so my doctor ordered iron infusions. I didn’t think anything of it as during my first pregnancy in 2023, I also had iron deficient anemia and my iron infusions were covered by my insurance but it was through a different health care provider.
BCBS is claiming that the treatment I received for iron deficient anemia isn’t covered. The procedure was coded as q0138.
Do I appeal? Do I call my health care provider and see if they coded this wrong? Owing $11k for something that’s been covered before is stressing me out. I never would have agreed to iron infusions if I had known it would be denied. I cannot afford an $11k bill…
Mercury Insurance - Looking for my daughter
My daughter is 28 yo. She just bought a 2023 Subaru cross Trek. She was on our auto insurance since she started driving, although she moved about 5 years ago. When she bought the car the insurance company called and told her she had to get her own policy. We have mercury insurance. They gave her a quote for about $4000 per year. She has had a couple accidents. Wondering if anyone can give a few companies that are cheaper. She has been teaching for 5 years, so, educator discount? She lives in 90031 zip. Thank you.
Chase - Random driver backed into my rental car
This happened in Texas, USA fwiw. Thanks for any opinions or advice.
I did not purchase the rental company's insurance but did pay for the rental with my Chase Sapphire, which has good collision coverage.
Dent in bumper not too major. The other driver clearly was at fault and in fact didn't even collect my info since we both knew it was her fault. I got all her info and now my rental company is *trying to get my insurance info*. I refused to give them my insurance info on the accident form when I returned the vehicle since I wasn't liable. Also I only have liability.
The rental company, in their initial email after the accident did not mention whether they tried to contact the other person.
What's my play? Should I contact Chase first and get a person for the rental company to contact or what should I do?
your insurance company - Other driver in at-fault accident contacting me about coverage for their rental
A couple months ago I rear ended someone. They were waiting to turn right and I was behind them doing the same. They looked like they started turning, so I pulled up to the crosswalk and looked left to check for traffic, then started my own turn when the coast was clear - only to bump into their rear corner and realize they hadn't actually turned when I thought they did; they were still just waiting there in front of the crosswalk. I was at fault for beginning my turn without looking and rear ending them (I know you're advised to not accept fault at the scene of an accident but I'd never been in an accident before and I was pretty flustered). I apologized to the other party and we exchanged insurance and contact information. Neither of us wanted to call the police and they assured me they weren't hurt.
The other driver asked me to call them in about an hour after they got home, but insisted I don't leave a voicemail if they don't pick up. I agreed but the more I thought about it the less sense it made to me if we were just going to go through insurance anyway, but I called regardless and sure enough they didn't pick up. They filed a claim later that day, I was found 100% at fault, and I thought that was it.
Earlier today, however, I received a voicemail from that other driver asking me to call them when I could. I didn't see a reason to if our insurance settled it, but against my better judgment I went ahead and called them back. They told me that my insurance had refused to pay for their rental car, and wouldn't give them a "satisfactory reason" for the denial. They asked me if I could get in touch with my insurance company about it, and while I wasn't really sure what I can do about that, I told them I'd try. They did \*not\* ask me if I would be willing to pay for it myself, and I did not offer to do so, but I kind of got the vibe that they might have wanted me to if my insurance doesn't cover it. They also gave a specific number for the amount of the rental, leading me to believe they'd already rented it and were seeking reimbursement.
So my question is, do I actually bother contacting my insurance company about this? I assume that they had a reason to refuse to cover it; the amount the other driver paid sounded like too much to me, but this is just my speculation. Even if it's just my insurance being stingy, this seems like an issue that the other driver should be settling with them or going through their own insurance for, rather than something they should be contacting me about personally. What could I even do? Calling my insurance company and asking them "hey uhh could you cover the rental for that person I rear ended a couple months ago, they said you won't for some reason" doesn't strike me as a good idea.
My gut instinct is that the other driver is shit out of luck for getting an expensive rental before confirming that it would be covered, and I should refuse further contact, block their number, and let them deal with in
