Embrace - Increase of 150% with no explanation
10 days ago, I reached out to ask why my rate increased by 150% from last year to this year. No answer. Disappointing, but they have lost this customer.
Trupanion - They keep raising my rate and when…
They keep raising my rate and when something happens with my dog they always have an excuse why they shouldn’t have to pay. You are better off just making a savings account for your dog in case of emergencies.

Embrace - Horrible company
I cannot express how bad this company is. I switched to Embrace after Nationwide raised their rates so high that we could no longer afford them. I knew that the two pre-existing conditions our dog had (lixating patella and collapsing trachea) would not be covered, but I discussed them with my vet and he agreed that both were mild cases, not getting any worse and we would not go after treatment for either.
About six months after signing with Embrace, our dog came down with Pneumonia. Embrace denied all claims. Their excuse was that because our dog had come in with a cough due to the collapsing trachea in July of the previous year, Pneumonia would be considered a pre-existing condition. My vet rejected their excuse and wrote back that the pneumonia had nothing to do with the previous cough. They refused to pay. The pneumonia got worse, and to a point where our dog needed to be hospitalized (the very sort of thing I bought insurance for). We were several thousand in to treatment, and an emergency vet needed to place her in their hospital. I couldn’t afford the $5000/night cost. We tried our best, but we lost our baby, and it’s Embrace pet Insurances fault. If I were rich, I’d sue them simply out of principle. They were very much in the wrong, but there’s no way to fight them without money, and they know it. Stay away from this company. They are thieves.
Embrace - Rapid and unreasonable increase in price.
It's hard to know if this is a good insurance company to work with because I never made a claim. However, when I signed up two years ago, the monthly rate seemed very reasonable, but the following year upon renewal the rate went up by 30%. This year it is about to go up again an extra 50% of the new higher price so it will be almost twice the original price.
My animals are very healthy and I haven't made any claims. When I called I was told it is because my animals are getting older.
I did the math and if the premiums keep going up even at the 30% rate per year, if I open up a savings account and put that amount of money away each month, in 4 years I will have a few dollars shy of $10,000 saved up to take care of my animals without having to worry about dealing with an insurance company and paying deductibles and percentages, so that's what I am going to do.

Nationwide - Nationwide Not Worth It
Well, we got our Dane a nationwide policy that was amazing and got it when he was a puppy just in case. It saved his life when he got some mystery issue where he stopped eating and wouldn’t gain weight for 8 months. We got him healthy and on a prescription food that has made all the difference. He turned 4 and Nationwide cancelled us. I know it was a very good plan and we had been told they wouldn’t be offering it in the future so not to cancel it because it was so good, but we thought as long as we didn’t cancel- we’d have it for the duration of his life. Nope! Gone. His food is $160/ 25-pound bag and he can’t do without out. We’d already seen a price increase over time but we’re willing to pay that for the great coverage. I called to find out what alternative policy I could get only to find out it was not even close to what we had. I was unable to get much in the way of details when I talked to someone there, but told we could cancel at any time. I decided to enroll so I could get the details since they wanted to withhold so much info. It took way longer than expected to be approved. We were treated like we were new members- everything was pre-existing and all of his minor issues were exaggerated to prevent coverage. After readying the policy, I realized it doesn’t cover the ACL or basically any knee issues. Our previous one requires 6 mo of having the policy before covering this but this one doesn’t cover it. Anyways..,basically it’s a terrible plan comparable to all of the other companies I researched when he was a puppy and determined to be completely useless. I think Nationwide could have maybe put limits on how many bags they would cover of Rx food, raised policy prices again or something but to completely get rid of so many benefits proves they don’t care about customer loyalty or pets in general. I used to tell so many people to get Nationwide if they were interested in pet insurance, but will now be telling everyone what a joke it has become. Will be canceling our policy immediately!

I have pets best for my other dog and it pays much better than this plan.
Trupanion Canada - Get it early or not at all
Classic insurance company
Will deny coverages for existing conditions but charge you like your getting covered for absolutely everything.
I think my premiums just about doubled in 6 years with no claims.
My personal experience would have cost me over 7000 dollars for the term of my policy to be rejected on my first and only claim to cover to euthanize my pet versus putting him through a 3rd back surgery which wouldn't have been covered by them either. Appearntly if the reasoning for being euthanized has anything to do with a prior condition they won't cover it......it's not about the couple dollars I didn't get reimbursed but more about the slimey reasoning that they use to justify this denial all while keeping their hands out for your ever increasing monthly payment.
Do yourself a favor and put the equivalent In a savings account.
