Pets Best - I advised Pet's Best it was unwise to send me one of these emails, but here we are.
I advised Pet's Best it was unwise to send me one of these emails, but here we are.
I have a 15 year old super senior calico. I had previously been with Embrace Pet insurance for years, but their prices had become insane so I switched to Pet's Best. She was listed by Embrace as a "healthy pet" with no preexisting conditions, and I also checked with my vet before making the switch, so I did not anticipate any trouble.
On December 31st my girl started acting odd, and by the morning of January 1st she did not get any better, so I wanted to take her to the vet. But since it was January 1st, everything was closed, I had no choice but to run her to the emergency vet. A few hours and $1,900 later, I found out she had a UTI. When I took her in, the vet noted she was skinny. I was like, "Yea. She doesn't eat as much since she's gotten older." So the vet prescribed appetite stimulant and, as part of the treatment for the UTI, a medication for vomiting as I told them one of the reasons I took her in was because she had vomited that morning.
When I got my receipts for everything, took them home and scanned them and submitted them to Pet's Best for reimbursement, they tried to deny the claim for the entire $1,900 for the UTI because the medication the emergency vet prescribed for her appetite, Mirtazapine, as well as the medication for vomiting, were ones that her primary vet prescribed at same point in the past when her appetite first started toning down. We are talking years into the past. It had nothing to do with her having a UTI now in 2025. I confirmed that with both her regular vet and the emergency vet, both of whom were totally confused by this decision. I had to do two appeals to get this case in front of an actual veterinarian who ruled in favor of my reimbursement. I don't know who is looking at the first level claims and first level appeals, but I seriously question how informed these people are in pet health, or if they just try very hard to try to find reasons to not cover claims. But think very hard before giving your hard-earned money to this company because they have been nothing but a headache for me.
Spot - Extreme increases to annual premium (50%)
My policy has increased 50% for a single cat that hasn’t had any claims since starting with this company. I reached out and was told the increase was "necessary due to either the age of your pet, advances in veterinary medicine, or an update to the coverage that your policy provides". I compared the new policy to the last and there was no change in coverage. My cat is 12. The premium went from $742.92 to $1,113.72. In my opinion they are preying on pet parents. If you already have a policy, be sure to login to the site often and diligently check your mail towards your annual date because your payment could increase over $30/m.
Nationwide - Policy lapse
I have been a client for over 18 years with multiple dogs. Today I found out that because I paid for one of my dogs policies in full, her policy actually lapsed and she didn’t have coverage for the last month. With my other dogs, their policies automatically renewed. The policy could not be reinstated and actually had to create a new policy. I am very upset by this. With that said my dog now does not have coverage and will not for at least two weeks. In addition, I submitted a bill for $191 that could’ve went to my deductible for the year, and now that doesn’t count.
ASPCA - Not recommended for service
My dog tore her ACL, it took this company over a month to review the claim. They denied the claim for pre existing condition. She can only tear an ACL one time.
When she passed away it took them 4 days to read my email and cancel her policy.
Billing, it's ridiculous to charge $2 per month, per pet for billing. I can not always pay ahead of time as they claim you can. I can't use my prepaid debit card for automatic billing.
Pets Best - Terrible process, endless delays
Terribel outcome, many delays, extra notifications each monday regarding missing documenst and proof of payment. Every time I upload a claim I called petsbest and talk with an agent making sure all documets are uploaded and STILL delays. They said that there is no way to escalate or to talk with a supervisor. I strongly regret I have my pets with another pet insurance and I thought to move them. Bad choice now I can not move them to another insurance, They need verbal confirmation about proof of payments and that is a first and I had 3 excellent insurances before and the turn around was at most a week. Only because the sad memories of the other ones I thought to have this petsbest. Phone recording is so long insisting to go to the web site.... thenwhat?
Here with pest bets says that can take up to 4 days. WHY, all documenst are okai and submitted correctly. I submited a complain to them, I also got a fax from them. Also I did a review in Google and I just dont want other pets parents to go through like me with endless reviews and doubts even with a credit card statement that did niot have my name on it but the amount mach the veterinary services. The more than 30 days delays I paid in extra fees and credit card charges just because theey dont feel like doing the process better for the clients. It is deplorable, there are no supervisors that will call back either, I tried that.
Spot - Bait and Switch scam.
This company is horrible! What a scam they pull. We adopted a Golden Retriever in July 2024. Purchased pet insurance from Spot and chose “Accident Only”. We passed all waiting periods and made monthly payments on time. Cut to March 2025, my dog became injured in the backyard after his morning walk. He was playing and running, and slipped in the wet grass. He then became unwilling to stand and unwilling to walk as the afternoon progressed. We made the decision to take him to emergency vet where radiographs were taken and pain meds and anti inflammatory given. We then submitted a claim which was promptly denied as we didn’t provide an “exact and specific time” for the incident. We immediately appealed and provided ALL of his medical records AGAIN (this was also done at the application time). The appeal was just denied. What an absolute bait and switch this company pulled. Be very aware of doing business with them.
Embrace - SCAM
SCAM. If you don’t get insurance when your dog is born, everything will be considered a preexisting condition.
Embrace - I feel the policies are too expensive, too many pre existing, cannot get thru on the phone line, FAQ's page is worthless
I feel the policies are too expensive. Instead of giving you all 160 dollars a month I should have put those monies in a bank account since most things you claim are pre existing. After one year of coverage, I submit a claim for $206.00 and I find out I have a $500 deductible. Secondly, I tried to call and was on hold for 20 minutes prior to disconnecting. Lastly, after going thru the website to submit the claim it kicked me out and make me complete it all over again. Horrible experience, I will be discontinuing coverage with you all, with more thought about all the exclusions you have on my two pets makes sense to just save the monies and put in an acct.
Nationwide - the website froze sooo many times that…
the website froze sooo many times that I had to start over 3 times. other than that was easy to set up
Nationwide - Bad option for lifetime of a dog…
My dog has been covered with nation wide for 8 years. They got rid of a lot of pet plans currently and this last year. If your dog has preexisting conditions before they are 9 years old, you are screwed if you have nation wide. If you want your dog be covered for a life time do not go with Nation wide. Now, I have my dog's preexisting conditions that will never be covered because of Nation wide kicking us out of their plan. Nationwide will betray you when the dog gets old.
