I am very disappointed and concerned with Trupanion's service as of late. Especially if pet parents are relying on their help and services for the well-being of their animal...
Last year when I adopted a purebred cat, I was provided with a code from the breeder for a free 30 day policy. I had no problem activating it and the agent was very great! My only issue at that moment was they had told me I would be called back at the end of my 30 day trial, but was never called. I had therefore decided not to pursue a payed insurance with them.
I have now adopted a new cat from the same breeder and had another 30 day free trial. I tried calling the first time the night of the adoption and had to leave a message since no one could take my call. I waited 2 days for them to call me back. Nothing. I decided to call back on the 3rd day. I was then told that because I waited, I may not be able to benefit from my 30 day trial. I was also told I would be called back by a supervisor either tuesday or wednesday of this week. We are now thursday and I have not been called back...
I am glad that this was not for an ACTUAL HEALTH ISSUE with one of my animals and that I am not an actual paying client. But unfortunately, this experience was enough to convince me not to insure my pets with Trupanion.
Healthy Paws - WARNING - Sharp premium increases as your dog ages or has long term health issues
Warning! Be prepared for steep jumps in premiums as your pet ages & has more health care needs. We are long-time customers of Healthy Paws pet insurance & just got notice our premium is going to jump from $146.71 to $1,210.83 a month. That’s an increase of 725%. Assuming this unbelievable jump in cost had to be a mistake, we contacted Healthy Paws & this was their response:
“In the face of steeply rising costs and other veterinary industry developments in WA, after careful consideration, Healthy Paws will be replacing your current pet health insurance coverage...”
Even though vet prices may be increasing, that does not justify a 725% increase in premiums. We believe our aging dog, who had cancer surgery this past year, is no longer profitable enough for Healthy Paws. This appears to be a pet insurance company that pushes out dogs as they age & need more frequent vet care. It looks like their focus on profits outweighs their compassion for pets & their owners.
Fetch - I initially thought it was a…
I initially thought it was a coincidence, but after posting a negative review about this insurance company, I quickly noticed an influx of positive reviews with suspiciously generic names. Now, same thing is happening to knew negative reviewers. It feels like they are artificially boosting their reputation. Very disappointed with their practices.

12 years of paying premiums for two dogs, never had a claim paid even after getting everything they asked for.

Was able to use Trupanian while checking out at the vet office. Like how fast the process went. I was disappointed that one pays around $40+/month for the pet insurance, and for the vet visit, Trupanion only paid around $60.
Nationwide - Angelica was passive aggressive with me…
Angelica was passive aggressive with me when I tried to gain clarity about her response. I don’t appreciate her attitude for no reason.
Spot - Coverage vs Price
I changed insurnce companies from Hartville to Spot thinking I was going to save money. I'm not due to the coverage that isn't there. I am thinking seriouly of going back to Hartville due to just a few more dollars I can get better coverage.
Spot - Filed claim and didn’t get an option…
Filed claim and didn’t get an option for direct deposit so have to wait a week for them to mail a physical check.
Pets Best - Horrible insurance
Horrible insurance, if you can even call that. they declined two previous claims and paid about 30% if the last claim fir a condition that was not pre-existing.
MetLife - Good coverage but terrible claims processes
Metlife has wonderful humans and are great when talking directly to them. They also have great coverage in that they cover preventatives, and have decent rates. However, their claims process is miserable compared to alternatives like Trupanion. The submission process manages to be rigid and clunky at the same time- and does not allow for enough information on the forms, which then necessitates additional requests for information. Those requests often get lost in review, causing additional delays. I have had several claims take more than 30 days to process and take multiple calls to try to get their own teams to understand that they already had the information they need.
