United Healthcare - Appeal: UH Erroneous Determination as Out-of-Network (when provide is in-network)
Hi all - I was wondering what the likelihood that my Appeal that I finally sent in will be successful or if I'm just going to continue getting the runaround from United Healthcare. At this stage is it worth doing anything else (or do I have to wait until the Appeal plays out?)
Some details...
The claim that I filed with United Healthcare had all the correct, relevant, and necessary information including the in-network Tax ID, the Practice’s pertinent information, the doctor’s name, itemized receipts (two – one paid with FSA and one paid with credit card), and other pertinent claim-related information.
United Healthcare processed the claim as out-of-network, but the Practice is in network, which made me receive +/- $3,000 less in reimbursement than I should have (due to that money going to an out-of-network deductible).
I have called United Healthcare more than 15 times now across 3 months to see what else is needed and to fix the wrongly coded EOB and I’m always told that United Healthcare made a processing error and will fix it – but it never happens months and months later.
The EOB erroneously states that this was an out of network event, but everything was in-network, and I have coverage for the procedure on my plan.
Once again, every time I have called United Healthcare, they have told me that I’m right, that they are ‘backing out’ of the old claim and will fix it, and every time nothing has been fixed. I just called earlier this week, and the 15th advocate I spoke with (after taking 20 minutes to look over all the times I called and notes) said I was 100% absolutely correct, I should have received an EOB saying it was in-network, and the determination was wrong, but folks keep coding it – inexplicably – as out of network.
She encouraged me to appeal....which I just did.
Expectations of what may come next? Thank you.
Wawanesa - Cancelling Canadian Wawanesa Auto Insurance – $3,600 Fee?! I Can’t Afford That – Need Advice
Hey Reddit,
I’m a 27-year-old male, single, no spouse or kids, living in Mississauga. I moved to Canada last year on PR, got my G license, and financed my first car (Honda Civic Hybrid 2025) in late November. I’ve had Wawanesa auto insurance ever since, paying $750/month through automatic withdrawal.
Here’s the full picture:-
I originally got this car not just for personal use, but also with the intention to do Uber Eats. I wanted to stay completely legit, so I was upfront with every insurance provider I contacted. They all told me that due to my lack of Canadian driving history, I wasn’t eligible for regular commercial insurance. So I went through a broker, and he found me a commercial policy with Wawanesa that would cover Uber driving.
I also have a main job just 30 seconds walk from my house, and I have a couple of major licensing exams coming up, so Uber is going to take a backseat for the next few months anyway.
That’s why I’m thinking of canceling my insurance or switching to a non-commercial plan, but here's the problem:-
I’ve heard that canceling before the end of the term means Wawanesa could charge a short-rate cancellation fee, and someone said it might total around $3,600 upfront in my case since my policy started around November, 2024.
I simply don’t have that kind of money in my account.
If I don’t cancel, they’ll just take another $750 in the first week of April, as usual.
Also worth noting:-
I have a clean driving record since getting my G license here in Canada, except one camera ticket I got in Brampton for going 7-8 km/h over the limit.
I’ve used TD Bank’s auto insurance calculator and it showed that I could probably get a non-commercial plan in the mid-$400s—which is way more reasonable.
The broker who arranged my current plan hasn’t been very transparent & hasn't even been responding to my calls or texts recently, so I’m planning to contact Wawanesa directly when their office opens.
So here are my questions while I lose sleep over this:-
1. Any preparation tips on what I should say or talk or do on my upcoming phone call with Wawanesa? (I'm completely new to all of this)
2. If I cancel now, will I still be charged the full $3,600 upfront?
3. Can I negotiate or pay the cancellation fee in installments?
4. If I do cancel, what should I look out for?
5. Is there any way to downgrade to a non-commercial plan instead of canceling altogether?
6. What would you do in my situation? Any personal experience with Wawanesa or brokers?
I know I should probably just call Wawanesa and ask all this, and I will once they open. But since I can’t sleep and this is really stressing me out, I figured I’d toss it out to Reddit too. Appreciate any advice you all have.
Thanks!
Progressive - Prior Resident added to my policy, how to remove
For context, the state is Maryland
I live in a rental house and there is a prior resident named Stacy D. (Hiding her last name for privacy). I don’t know this person, other than occasionally getting some of her mail in our mailbox, which leads me to assume she is a prior resident at this unit.
This morning, i had new policy documents added to my Progressive policy. They added Stacy D. to my policy as an insured driver, and my rate increased from $140 a month to $580 a month. I also lost some of my discounts, like safe driving discount, because Stacy D. has apparently been in two at fault accidents in the past year.
Now I called progressive to remove this person from my policy, and their underwriting says that she can’t be removed unless i have proof of address showing that she doesn’t live here.
A few questions:
1. How do i prove that someone (a stranger) doesn’t live here? I don’t have any contact info for her or any way to get her current address. I don’t know this person or have any knowledge about her other than occasionally getting junk mail that is addressed for her.
2. Is there a possibility of me getting any discounts (such as safe driving discount) added back to my account, if I am able to remove this person?
3. Because i live in a rental unit, are there any other steps I can take to prevent prior residents from being added to my policy in the future?
Blue Cross - ANY ADVICE? FSA mess over new year
Hello, and thanks in advance for any suggestions.
I have a 2024 and a 2025 FSA - for simplicity lets say theres 750 in each.
We had a hospital stay for the birth of a child, admit on 12/30/24 and discharge on 1/2/25. Total bill 800.
I need to pay the 2024 expenses with the 2024 FSA, and 2025 with the new 2025 FSA.
Hospital tells me to contact blue cross, blue cross tells me to contact hospital. Neither FSA companies help.
Hospital gave a detailed invoice, but the invoice is a mess and impossible for me to split into services given in 2024/2025. The invoice shows the full charges before insurance.
i asked blue cross to provide me with what I an responsibke for, split between the two years so I can call and manually charge each FSA for thier respective years… then pray the fsa will take the invoice as a reciept cus I cant get an EOB split by year…
This is all a mess, Im exhausted with a baby and JUST WANT TO USE MY OWN MONEY I paid into these stupid FSA’s. To make it worse my employer chsnged FSA providers so I have 2 seperate fsa companies to submit these charges.
Any tips?
Healthy Paws - Healthy Paws rate increase
I DO NOT RECOMMEND this pet insurance company if you hope and expect your dog to live a full life.
My dog is now 11 and had a cancer issue that was successfully taken care of 2.5 years ago. And I am 69.
I just received a rate increase from $83/month to $216/month. That’s a $133 month increase. Triple my monthly rate.
Healthy paws suggested I lower my rate by increasing my deductible. Or lower my reimbursement rate. Any way I calculate it, it basically comes out to cost me the same. And the cost would be prohibitive to go somewhere else at this point.
I WOULD NEVER HAVE CHOSEN THIS COMPANY IF I KNEW THEY WEREN’T IN IT WITH ME FOR THE LONG HAUL.
They were hoping my dog would die before they took a hit on their profits with my dog.
The rep told me there’s nothing they could do for me. I told her it was easy to triple my rate. It should be equally easy to lower it back down.
She said no.
Aetna - Aetna- EOB says your share amount, no bill yet
Hello, I have Aetna insurance and my daughter was prescribed to go for hypoallergenic formula. I spoke with agents, doctor office submitted required docs and they received a fax saying it’s covered. They directed me to Coram where I can order fomula.
Coram and Aetna coordinated and determined I’m covered at 100%
Now, in my Aetna app the claim is denied and my share is $6536. I have not received a bill from the provider(Coram). I’m panicking
Please tell me if I owe the above amount?
Medica - Insurance not fully covering room and board after birth
I live in Minnesota where insurance companies are required to cover 48 hours of inpatient care after a vaginal birth. https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/62A.0411#:~:text=Every%20health%20plan%20must%20provide,a%20mother%20and%20her%20newborn.
My insurance (Medica) is trying to make me pay $1850 of the $8300 billed to them for room and board after I gave birth. The stay was less than 48 hours. Is this legal? Do I have a course of action here?
Firestone - I need to sue Firestone...the corporation?
Long story short. I brought my car into a NJ location while on business (I'm from Maryland) to get a pair of front driveshafts put into a 2013 Mercedes Benz GLK 250 and they didn't remove one simple little circlip that held one of them into the oil pan underneath the motor. (it's AWD). They proceeded to beat the ever living daylights out of the drivers side front driveshaft to the point that it broke the shoulder that held that circlip, and therefore the driveshaft, into the oil pan. I had to tow the car six hours home and had to have the drivetrain completely removed from the car so that the oil pan could be replaced. It was professionally done and I have all of the old parts to prove my point. The car is now fixed and, at minimum, I am out $7k. Firestone, the corporation is based out of Nashville, TN. How should I go about finding a lawyer that is based there? Or does it matter? As a matter of principle I am not letting this go.
State Farm - At fault auto insurance company won't pay whole bill advice needed
Some one hit my vehicle while it was parked in Tennessee. I got a police report showing they were at fault. When they contacted me to get it fixed I did not go with a body shop in their network. They said that was ok.
Now the car is almost fixed and the body shop said the insurance company won't pay the amount the body shop said. It is a difference of $135 from a $1500 bill they already paid.
What should I do? They said because I didn't use their network body shop it was not guaranteed to pay everything. I also have a rental from them. I called twice today to talk to the insurance supervisor and have not got a call back. It is state farm.
Thanks for the advice.
Progressive - Progressive almost doubled my rate at renewal
I decided to go with progressive when I purchased my new car in march. I paid $850 for my 6 month plan. I just got my renewal and they want 1400!! I used the snapshot and got 4/5 start, haven't had any tickets or accidents since I started with them. I hit a deer in November of 24 but that was report on my first plan so what's making my rate so high? I got on their website and did a quote for myself (including the deer accident) and it said $700 for 6 months.
