Lemonade - Savings Account vs Pet Insurance
So our Lemonade pet insurance is starting to be somewhat outrageous - $150 (80% Preventative) and growing at 7 years old. Healthy dog currently, but when we first got it, visited quite a few times. Lumps but not cancerous. Etc.
Pet insurance ALSO does not always work. Lemonade also does not have a straight-forward appeal process when one of their staff misunderstands an issue and mis-categorizes it and denies a claim.
I'm wondering if it makes sense to just start a savings account and put in $150/month into it? (And grow it by 25% yearly - the same rate that Lemonade has been increasing)
Lemonade - Is it even worth it??
First of all thank you for reading.
With how many buggers I have is there a pet insurance out there that wont charge a arm and a leg & actually have decent things to offer? And possibly not drive the price up every year 😭
I have 7 cats. 4 are about a year old, one is 3, another is 1 and another i really have no clue but she's roughly 1-3 because she randomly showed up on our porch a few months back.
2 girls, the rest are boys.
With that said, I have thought about insurance since I got the 4 kittens last year, I kept seeing Lemonade ads at the time and I never knew about pet insurance before then. I was on the fence because of the mixed online reviews.
My first thought was that insurance is definitely a scam. Why pay them when they aren't even likely to accept my claim? Then I saw the vetanarian access was appealing, not sure if it's worth it though.
Im not having a single issue with anyone currently, I just have seen people say they get quoted $90 for elderly pets... but some say they got their rates locked in at like $10 a month just because they registered when their pet was a baby.
I don't know if the better option would be a personal savings or pet insurance.
I was quoted $14-$16 a month per cat for Spot & Fetch.
Lemonade - Keep Lemonade or just use a Savings Account?
I have a 12-year-old corgi who is very healthy (just had his exam and he’s in great shape) and he’s been insured by Lemonade for several years. I always have paid more in premiums than claims, and that’s fine. Insurance is about covering the unexpected.
I got his insurance renewal from Lemonade and they want to increase his premium from $150/mo to $220/mo. I mean, I get it, actuarially he’s a higher risk. It’s been going up really fast.
I’m thinking of instead of paying the $220/mo, just putting the monthly amount into a savings account and just save for when those big expenses come.
Has anyone done this, successfully? I figure that lemonade is going to keep increasing the premiums to levels that are unaffordable and do want to push me out of the system. But I want to cover the unexpected somehow.
I cannot switch carriers because no one is going to insure a 13-year-old dog. It’s either stay with them and throw money at premiums or start saving money for the future.
Lemonade - Grandma got dementia so we took over care of dog- pet insurance won’t change name on insurance without losing pre-existing care- advice appreciated
My grandma has a dog and we helped her get insurance for him a while back, but her dementia has progressed quickly and pretty dramatically so my mom has taken over his care. (My grandma lives with my parents so she’s always had a big part in his care but now my mom has him full time).
We have Lemonade. My mom told them what was going on and they said they could add my mom as a co-owner, but then she couldn’t make adjustments or any changes to his policy. Otherwise, she would have to cancel his account completely and start a new one under her name. She wanted to cancel it and start it under her name since sadly my grandma will not get better and she wants to add dentals to his plan, but he did have anal gland issues this year and lemonade said that if he has anal gland issues in the future they would no longer be covered under my moms plan because they would be considered a pre-existing condition now.
Just looking for advice on what to do. It doesn’t seem fair, but I know insurance isn’t fair lol. Should we look at other insurance options? Or just add my mom as a co-owner? The anal gland issue was expensive so we don’t want to lose coverage on that if it comes back but also it sucks that my grandma has something we couldn’t predict nor control and now we’re in this predicament. Any advice would be helpful!!
Lemonade - Lemonade Insurance Pre-approvals
I have had a policy with lemonade for nearly 2 years now. They have been pretty decent about instantly approving a claim but my first one was denied a year ago due to a preexisting condition they swore up and down was listed in my dog’s history, that wasn’t. After a denial and appeal, it was still denied. I ended up dropping the fight with them on it.
Now, my dog has a cyst that is needing removal now, but was discovered before I put him on insurance but the vet has deemed it needing to be removed now - then, they weren’t worried about it. It is mentioned in his health history with the vet, so I fear they will label this a preexisting condition as well. But lemonade told me via phone that they would do a reapproval, but after sending in the estimate - I was met with this.. can someone help me understand why the value of the estimate matters more than the type of service requested to be approved? The estimate is $1,306. I’m so PO rn. The estimate literally says it is for a surgery. I would understand if it was a normal appointment and under 3.5k.. Like I literally do not have the funds to do the surgery without knowing I won’t get reimbursed. Is this normal with other carriers?? 🙃
Lemonade - Lemonade up to $160/m now. Recommended alternatives?
My dog is about to turn 10 and they want $160/m now. Should I switch, and if so where to?
Lemonade - Help! Lemonade pet insurance
Can someone help me with Lemonade pet insurance?
My pet policy is 80% reimbursement, $250 deductible, $10,000 annual.
My dog went to the vet to get a mass checked out and got bloodwork done.
My plan doesn't cover exams or bloodwork.
Cytology was $185 and fine needle aspiration was $40.
In this case, the eligible cost that would go towards the deductible is the cytology exam and fine needle aspiration, which adds up to $225.
I was under the impression Lemonade paid out 80% AFTER the deductible is met.
But Lemonade just got back to me, and it shows that they covered 80% of the $225, which is $180.
Which means I still have to pay $70 until my deductible is met, instead of $25.
I thought the 80% was only for reimbursement after the deductible, not 80% coverage of the deductible.
Is this how all pet insurance work?
Lemonade - Is parvo going to be a preexisting condition for life?
We recently rescued a mastiff puppy. She came down with parvo but is on the road to recovery. I would like to get insurance for her but I am concerned that having parvo as a puppy is a recipe for getting denied for any claim going forward. It just seems like parvo is one of those illnesses that could count against anything that goes wrong in the future. I reached out to Lemonade and their response was very general and generic. Preexisting, reviewing history with any claim, etc, etc.
Lemonade - What’s the deal with lemonade pet insurance!?
I submitted a claim on 4/12 for my three year old domestic shorthair cat for a diagnosis of FHS. On the claim I asked for reimbursement of the medicine ( Gabapentin ) and the cost for the emergency visit. I submitted all medical records as requested. Today 4/29 and the claim is still in review. I signed up for Lemonade when my cat was a kitten. He has no pre existing conditions and I take him to all his annual vet appointments. Lemonade is not very communicative. I only received correspondence when I reached out to them asking for an update. They say they are working on processing the claim as quickly as possible. Is this normal turn around time?
Lemonade - Stocks in stead of pet insurance
Hey everyone,
I had lemonade pet insurance for around a year but they don’t cover my dogs allergies (pre exist). They also upped my insurance to almost 50 bucks a month, before it was 35.
So I dropped them and have been putting money away each week in the stock market in case of an emergency. I have been doing this for almost a year and have around 700 bucks in it now (robinhood). Obviously the stocks are down right now and I’m down 30 bucks but historically they will go up again.
Just wondering if anyone else has decided to this instead, it’s nice seeing my money actually being saved rather than throwing it away with pet insurance and things they do not cover.
I first got my dog and took him to the vet prior to getting insurance and that’s why they don’t cover his allergy meds. NOTE: always get pet insurance before going to the vet if you choose to get it.
