Healthy Paws - Crummy Customer Service.
I just got off the phone with Healthy Paws, the pet insurance company that takes the payment every month and doesn't give a whit about claims. Paul Morrisette, whoever you are, you have not bothered to address a problem with a claim I sent in. Then when I notified you that you addressed one invoice out of the three submitted, did you get back to me. Really crummy customer service. I have never used the insurance, just paid the monthly bill for years. Then, when I do submit bills, nothing from you.
Healthy Paws - I'm writing this review to share my…
I'm writing this review to share my disappointing experience with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance, which ultimately led me to cancel my policy.
When my dog developed otitis externa (ear infection), I submitted claims for his treatment, expecting coverage as a loyal policyholder. Instead, Healthy Paws denied the claims, citing "pre-existing conditions" based on a swimming incident that occurred approximately seven years ago.
What made this denial particularly frustrating was that I obtained a detailed letter from our vet. He clearly stated his professional medical opinion that the current ear infection was "a new, unrelated medical issue, and not a recurrence or continuation of any problem stemming from years prior."
Despite having a licensed veterinarian's expert assessment contradicting their denial, Healthy Paws refused to reconsider the claim.
While I understand that insurance companies need to protect against fraudulent claims, completely disregarding a veterinarian's professional medical opinion feels unreasonable. The company seemed more focused on finding reasons to deny coverage than on working with medical professionals to understand the actual medical facts.
The appeals process felt dismissive. Even when presented with clear medical evidence from a qualified professional, they simply restated their policy terms rather than engaging with the medical evidence provided.
After this experience, I lost confidence in Healthy Paws' willingness to provide coverage when actually needed. I cancelled my policy and switched to a different provider that I hope will be more reasonable when evaluating legitimate claims.
Pet insurance should provide peace of mind, but my experience with Healthy Paws created additional stress during an already difficult time when my pet was unwell. When a veterinarian provides a clear medical opinion that contradicts an insurance denial, the company should give that professional assessment serious consideration rather than automatically defaulting to denial.
I cannot recommend Healthy Paws based on this experience. There are other pet insurance companies that may be more willing to work with customers and respect veterinary expertise when evaluating claims.
EDIT:
I got off the phone with a CLM one minute ago, today, 11JUN2025, and was told that they have no need for information from TrustPilot after I said I was on a trip and the link to respond via the "Find a reviewer" had expired. They looked up my name and matched it to the account, and he said there was nothing to do; so I left it at that. Like I said, these folks don't care.
Healthy Paws - Ridiculous Rates are Doggies Get Older
Prices were reasonable as puppies. Now that doggies are 7 years old, the rates keep increasing substantially. This year was $25 per policy for each doggie. Plus, they advised today to implement a 2.99% credit card fee unless I move to ACH. They are part of CHUBB Insurance Company. This is the straw that broke the camel’s back. I’ll just save my premiums and hope for the best with my doggies. Pretty soon the cost will be more that my Medicare Supplement Insurance.
Healthy Paws - Unscrupulous Company – 10+ Year Experience with them
We’ve been with Healthy Paws for over 10 years, and sadly, they've been very frustrating and unprofessional.
They regularly find ways to deny coverage for certain items on invoices - even those we believe should be covered. When we called to ask why the reimbursements were less than expected, they told us they'd follow up and asked for specific dates/times so they could call us back. But they never called us back. When we did follow up, they brushed us off, claiming we had already been reimbursed - completely avoiding the actual issue.
The worst part? We feel trapped. Our dog is now a senior, and switching insurance isn't really an option. If we go to a new provider, any existing conditions likely won't be covered. So HealthyPaws knows we're stuck - and that makes their lack of transparency and accountability even more upsetting. What an UNSCRUPULOUS company. THIEVES.
If you're considering HealthyPaws, BE VERY CAREFUL. Read the fine print, track every claim, and know that customer loyalty doesn't seem to count for much. Your premiums will keep going up, and they will never help you, especially when your dog becomes older.
Healthy Paws - 2.99% increase for credit card payments, effective July 4 2025
We are longtime Health Paws clients.
On June 5, 2025 we received an email from Healthy Paws, indicating that, effective July 4, 2025 Healthy Paws, will be transitioning their credit card billing services to a third-party vendor, and that they will impose a 2.99% fee on all credit card payments, for Healthy Paws premiums.
Previously, Healthy Paws charged no fee for monthly premiums, paid by credit card.
In essence, Healthy Paws has increased our already expensive premiums, by 2.99%. That's a lot of money.
Healthy Paws - Be Cautious—Especially If You Have or Plan to Have an Older Pet
I wanted to share my experience to help others make an informed decision. After 14 years with Healthy Paws, I was forced to cancel my policy due to an astronomical premium increase. Over just four years, my monthly premium jumped 572%. I was already paying $431/month—but then they asked for $776 more per month, bringing my total to $1,207/month.
Like many newer customers, I started at a very affordable $34/month and had few issues or increases—until my pet turned 10. After that, things changed dramatically. Age suddenly became the biggest factor in pricing, despite what I had been told when I signed up.
The stress, fear, and financial uncertainty this created have taken a serious toll. I now face the reality of having an older pet with pre-existing conditions—hard to be insurable elsewhere—because I trusted the messaging that age wouldn’t be a factor that impacts premiums (simply Google this and see how they publicly stated this, such as an article from Consumer's Checkbook).
I believed Healthy Paws would provide lifetime support, but the policy model now feels unsustainable and, frankly, unfair to long-term customers.
From my research and reading others’ experiences (especially on Reddit), it seems these extreme increases began around 2020–2021, around the time Westchester Fire and Chubb took over operations. This was once a company I proudly recommended. Now, I feel a responsibility to warn others—especially those with aging pets—about what may lie ahead.
If you're reading reviews here, take note of how many 5-star ratings are marked as “Invited.” From my experience, these are often from customers who were prompted to leave feedback after a recent claim or support interaction. That doesn’t make them dishonest—but it does suggest they may not reflect the full, long-term experience.
Please look beyond the star rating and read reviews from people who’ve had policies for many years. Healthy Paws may still work well for new customers, but it’s crucial to understand how things may change as your pet ages.
Healthy Paws - BEWARE: Premiums Skyrocket Over Time — They Don't Want Long-Term Customers
I just canceled my Healthy Paws policy after watching my monthly premium increase by over 500% in just 4 years. When I first signed up, the price was reasonable, and I genuinely believed I was protecting my dog long-term. But every single year, the premium jumped significantly — without any major claims on my end.
They’ll tell you it’s because “more pet parents are using their policies in your area,” but I’ve lived in both rural Colorado and now Oregon, and the excuse is always the same. The truth is: they don't want long-term customers.
The younger your pup is, the cheaper the policy — but once your dog starts aging (especially around 6 years old), be prepared for your monthly cost to become outrageous and unsustainable. It's clear that Healthy Paws is focused on maximizing profit from healthy young pets while pushing out responsible pet owners who might actually use the insurance when it matters.
It’s disappointing and greedy. This is not a company that supports loyal, long-term customers.
Healthy Paws - Horrible
My cat has been covered under HP since 2019, and only now is the second time I've needed to file a claim for her.
Process in app:
Page 1 is to upload invoice for claim.
Page 2 is to upload any missing medical records.
Filed a claim for a 5/27/25 visit. Attached the invoice to Page 1. Page 2 stated they are missing Medical records so I uploaded all of my attachments. The app started opening claims for those old wellness visits from the records.
Received a message requesting missing records. Emailed all records May 29.
Received another message for same. Emailed all records June 3.
Filed claims (separately) for 6/9 and 6/10/25 follow-ups. Same process. STILL claiming they do not have medical records. I attached all again for both claims and there are, once again, claims open for old wellness visits.
In total, I have submitted all of her medical records FIVE TIMES in the past 2 weeks.
Phone calls: May 30, June 9, June 10. All 3 confirmed they saw medical records were emailed. At least, I think because I could barely understand what they were saying nor am I sure they understood me.
As of today, June 11, the claim has not processed because I'm "missing information". In addition, I now have 9 open claims when there should only be 3.
I sent a heated email to customer service last night with the breakdown of the above. I'm not holding my breath for a reply.
Healthy Paws - Falsified my dogs breed, increased my premium
They changed their billing and now use an outside company so there's a minimum 3% surcharge on top of your monthly premium if you use a credit card. They want you to link your bank account to this unaffiliated company to avoid the surcharge, which is a huge no for me considering they falsified her breed on their own and increased one of my dogs premium an additional $100 a month.
They changed my dogs breed, despite a letter from her veterinarian saying she is not the breed they changed her to, without my consent, which increased her monthly premium to an additional $100. They refuse to refund me the money they overcharged me. I had to have my vet write another letter clearly stating her breed, despite them having her current veterinary records with her correct breed listed on them. This company is one of the worst pet insurance companies around and I would never recommend them
Healthy paws- I am not giving some random company a direct link to my bank account. That is absolutely insane. I signed up with your company, not the ones you contract with. And considering how you randomly increase her rate almost 100 a month, there is 0 chance im giving you access to my bank account. You can attempt to justify it any way you want, it's still deceptive and Im not the only one that has a problem with it based on reviews and what people say on social media. Now that my dogs had some claims, im stuck with your sub par company. My dogs name is Lottie. Ive spent more time on the phone with your reps regarding you guys changing her breed on your own than any other company or person in my life.
Healthy Paws - Beware of this company and their rate…
Beware of this company and their rate hikes.
We have been insured with Healthy Paws since my dog was a puppy. Initially, it was a $40 monthly cost with quick reimburesment and customer service. The company was sold a few years ago. Since then, they have tried to deny a few of my claims and I have had to go back and query it. They put our rate up to $85 after five years. I just got an email saying they were increasing my insurance to $170 a month...blaming state policies. My dog is nine years old, and I have probably made a total of five claims her entire life.
I am currently on the phone with them to discuss it. I have called twice to speak to a manger. Both times they have left me on hold to get rid of me.
