ASPCA - Looked over my cat's vet records and suddenly worried if insurance would actually cover anything
TL;DR: my 8yo DSH cat has "slightly abnormal shape to heart," "discussed URI, allergies, etc.", and "susp. feline idiopathic cystitis" written in his vet records, all from different exams and illnesses over the last few years, but with no recurrence in illness or symptoms. Are these comments enough for insurance companies to say he has incurable preexisting conditions and deny coverage of any future health issues?
I'm super late to the party (no one told me to get pet insurance when they're young), but I'm looking to get insurance for my two cats, Andy and Ollie. Given that they're basically my children and I'm finally in a position where I have a bit of income, I want to do what I can to make sure they're able to get whatever care they might need (though hopefully they never do). Both are 8 year old DSH, previously indoor/outdoor for 3 years, now indoor only, no major health issues so far (no ER visits, no chronic conditions, etc.).
I've been spending a bunch of time reading up on different companies, policies, reviews, kinds of issues people run into, etc., spoke with an ASPCA rep and planned to call Lemonade and Pumpkin to ask some questions and compare rates and plans and such. With all the frustration and confusion expressed different places about claims being denied for preexisting conditions, I decided to read back through the vet records I have and see if there was anything that my cats might get dinged for. There are a few things off the bat: they're both a bit on the chonky side, but weight has been steadily coming down into good ranges. A vet noted mild tartar two years ago, which I know means there's essentially no chance of any kind of dental coverage, but that's not necessarily the end of the world.
What's really got me worried is that Ollie has had a few illnesses that I could see insurance companies labeling as preexisting conditions and using to deny future coverage:
* May 2024- After a wellness exam where the vet said he was in good health, he became lethargic, struggled to use his litter box, and barely ate. I got him back into the vet ASAP, and the doctor found his bladder was painful and a little swollen, diagnosed "suspected feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC)", and gave him an anti-inflammatory shot and gabapentin. Ollie responded well and recovered in a few days with no issues since. Importantly, the vet noted that the inflammation could have been caused by stress and that his bladder was full but "did not seem to be blocked" -- I know that urinary blockages are considered incurable preexisting conditions, so I'm worried that the lack of definitive language (ie "no urinary blockage") could provide enough wiggle room for them to call it an incurable PEC.
* July 2023- This is the one I'm most worried about. I took them in because Ollie had been wheezing a bit after activities like playing with his brother. At some points, it sounded almost like he was trying to get a hairball out, but nothing ever came up. The vet ran some tests to check for heart disease, asthma, or a URI. His radiographs showed "no obvious signs of asthma" and "weren't a slam dunk for asthma", but unfortunately did show "potential heart issues, abnormalities on heart" and specifically that his heart was apparently a "slightly abnormal shape". She recommended a proBNP to see if his symptoms were heart-related and it came back negative, so she said it was most likely a URI and gave him antibiotic and steroid injections with instructions to come back for a trial asthma treatment if he didn't improve. Thankfully, he did improve and hasn't had any wheezing since. -- This is especially concerning because 1) asthma is an incurable PEC and even though none of his vets has ever diagnosed or trialed treatment for it, the fact that asthma was even mentioned could be enough for them to call it a PEC; and 2) the "slightly abnormal shape" of his heart just screams guaranteed denial of coverage. And if this is considered an incurable PEC, what kind of probably serious things could they potentially refuse to cover because it's tangentially related to his heart?
* Also, Ollie is a snorer. It's never gotten to a point where he's stopped breathing or anything, but it was happening frequently enough that I brought it up at a wellness exam. We used to live in a house that got fairly dusty, so I asked the vet if allergies might be contributing to his snoring and if an air purifier might help. The vet records read "Disc informed O about URI, allergies, etc.". Really really hoping that me asking about allergies doesn't lead to a future issue not being covered.
So yeah, I feel like there's enough in his records for insurance companies to reject so many different kinds of claims, especially claims for cardiac, respiratory, or renal health issues, by saying these illnesses (and snoring) are evidence of incurable preexisting conditions. One of the big reasons I want to get insurance is in case cancer tries to rear its ugly head, especially since both of my childhood pets died young from cancer and all my family could afford was basically just pain management. I don't want to go through that again with my boys, and there are also a ton of other big health issues that could pop up and (hopefully lmao) be covered by insurance. But as much as I want to believe that they'd be reasonable, at the end of the day, these insurance companies aren't non-profits, they exist to make as much money as they can, and there's no Pet ACA to prevent them from denying coverage because of preexisting conditions.
Which brings me to my main question (sorry for taking so long to get to the point): is getting insurance for Ollie worthwhile? I'd hate to spend the money on fairly pricey premiums just for anything that might come up to not be covered. Maybe I'm just overly worried and cynical, but the fact that something small can make a massive difference in how much longer I get with my fur babies is honestly scary. Sorry again for rambling, there's just a lot to consider. Any advice or insight is very much appreciated!
State Farm - Cash it?
I have a renters insurance claim due to a total loss from roof collapse and flooding during a storm. I sent in the inventory list (replacement cost policy) and there is about 10K in depreciation. My problem is I had $4k + (remaining after 2 weeks in a hotel and food) with loss of use but my adjuster gave me two weeks to move into a shoebox compared to a huge townhouse I had.
I can’t even buy the vast amount of things I lost due to the sheer size of where I live with no storage (I have one closet compared to a whole finished basement and utility room). The list they sent with the check for actual cost is in my hands. The list is printed and huge (mine was a spreadsheet).
I’m not happy. Quite frankly if I was given more time to use my loss of use (we did 2 weeks in a hotel for a permanent move) then I may have a larger place.
I want my money back (replacement cost) and almost wish I negotiated a settlement. I’m not sure if that’s still possible but what’s the best route here since
Healthy Paws - Healthy Paws Customer Service
I understand this is the world in which we now live, but it appears HP has outsourced all their customer service. Thankfully I rarely have to contact them, but when I do it's not exactly for 'scripted' issues. Has anyhow had any luck getting non-outsourced CS? It used to be, "hi thank you for calling healthy paws, this is Beyonce in Houston, how may I help you?" ...but, now it's not. And Beyonce was a lot more knowledgeable and if she couldn't answer the question she found someone who could. Now it's just replies being read from a script with little to no understanding of how certain claims/reimbursements/etc. even work. It's more than a tad frustration and definitely a lot more time consuming.
Optum - Optum HSA Transfers: Check sent to wrong company
Like many people, I realized Optum HSA sucks and was trying to transfer over to Fidelity. I put in the request with Fidelity to initiate the transfer and saw that my funds were transferred out of my Optum account in early March via a check they send to Fidelity.
Fast forward to this week, I talked to Fidelity several times since they had yet to recieve anything and in their words the timeline was odd. I call Optum and they are adamant that Fidelity should have received something and asks to me to confirm with them again by asking them to search by the check number.
I trust Optum about as much as I trust the New York Rangers to win the Stanley Cup so I ask them to confirm where they sent the funds. They read off an address and company that I had NEVER heard of (it is a real HSA company though)... I then confirm they received the actual request from Fidelity and they dont need any additional information to execute the transfer since they ALREADY have the information they need...
I don't have a huge HSA account so it was less stressful for me but I couldn't help but think how someone would feel with a HSA account with significant funds that they try to move towards the end of their career only for it to go missing. I'd have lost my mind in that situation!
PSA: Double check everything and anything with Optum. If something smells fishy, it probably does for a reason.
USAA - $500 policy increase in MA
My policy just renewed this month, my overall policy went from $2300 to over $2800. I had an accident back in 2023, very minor rear end tap. (I was at fault) the other party didn’t bring litigation against me until 2 months before the statute of limitations went up this year in april. My insurance company did pay out the settlement, and I was told I did not have a surcharge from this incident, and that if my insurance was to go up from this accident it would have happened in 2023 when the accident occurred. My insurance company (USAA) informed me of a state-wide increase being put into effect and that this increase on this renewal was only a portion of the overall increase. I’m just very confused, and unsure how it would increase that much if it wasn’t from this prior accident, and my driving record outside of it is totally clean. Been with this ins company for 6 years now, and I don’t want to switch as i’ve enjoyed it thus far but feel like I have to now that i’m being priced out of it. anyone in massachusetts have any insights?
Progressive - Progressive | Snapshot
Received my 6-month renewal notice for Progressive and suprise () a 20% increase.
Problem is I use Snapshot, have 4/5 average, which I thought yields an additional discount, not an increase.
I called. Progressive claims rates go up/down all the time and can not give me specific reason for this increase. My 4/5 average Snapshot is already included in new rate.
Is this practice common, follow *their* Snapshot rules - get increase ??
State Farm - Need advice concerning repairs to a “total loss” vehicle
Hi all,
I am looking for advice regarding my vehicle that was determined to be a total loss from a collision a couple months ago. It’s my first wreck and figuring out what to do every step of the way has been a total struggle. The communication between me, the insurance adjuster, and the shop has been absolutely terrible (with some information intentionally left out, it feels like) and I could use any help I can get. I’m in Oklahoma btw.
A couple months ago my ‘08 Mercury Mariner was rear-ended. Her insurance company, State Farm, determined it to be a total loss and offered me $7000 for the vehicle or $5800 to retain it. The vehicle has sentimental value to me (was my grandma’s car) and only has 64,000 miles on it and since it’s been in the family so long I know its history (NO mechanical problems whatsoever) so I would really like to retain and repair it. The shop that did the estimate provided a quote of $5100 to repair it. The insurance adjuster said the title would be clean if I retain the vehicle. My main question is, if I put the full $5100 into repairing the vehicle and I get hit again, will I get less money from insurance since the vehicle was already a total loss at some point (even with a clean title)? The adjuster said that that wasn’t true but also said the car had to be repaired “back to brand new” which seems like an impossibility/possible loophole that can be used later if there’s another wreck. My brother thinks I should put as little money as possible into it so if I get hit again I can have some of that $5800 to put towards a new car.
Like I said, total idiot when it comes to this kind of thing so any advice or clarification is welcome. Thank you in advance!
Geico - Cat stolen twice in two months. Should I file another claim?
Proud owner of a 2013 prius for about a year now. During memorial day weekend, my catalytic concerter was stolen while i was parked in Brooklyn. Got a police report, filed a claim with geico, and got it fixed after a couple weeks ($500 out of pocket cost for deductible)
This morning when parked in a pretty good neighborhood on Long Island, turned on the car and heard the hellcat noise. Made my stomach sink, worst feeling ever.
I'm now contemplating what to do. I'm sure in NYS, any decent fix would run me at least $1,500, likely much more. The last fix receipt showed $3,200 just for parts. But I'm afraid to file a big claim twice in such a short time span. Will my insurance consider non renewal or flag me as a risky driver? I'm pretty new to having my own auto insurance, any help or suggestions are welcome. Can't really afford anything beyond $500 right now😓
The way people go around doing this type of stuff is sickening. Makes me so upset lol
Geico - auto ins quote before being licensed
hi! very new to the world of insurance. i just got my permit and bought my own car, im 22 and trying to speed up this process because not being licensed or having a car is making my wallet take a HIT.
*(i learned how to drive and got a permit when i was 16, never got a car/license due to covid, turned 21 and decided just not to renew the permit because i assumed id never need it)*
i just bought my car last week, my dad is currently fixing it, just need to replace the solenoid. and then i'll be driving around and brushing up on my skills. all that annoying backstory aside, i'm trying to get an auto ins quote and cannot find anywhere to get one, tried geico and they won't give me a quote of how much id pay monthly, just how much id pay the day i signed up. tried progressive and got absolutely jack. i just want somewhere i can find out roughly how much id be paying, my dad said there's dozens of sites where you can find a quick ballpark quote and i can't seem to find a single one, help?
Carvana - Carvana Unregistered my car! Day 4 help! Location:New York
Carvana
Location: New York
I’ve had my Subaru from Carvana since 2023. I recently (3 weeks ago) bought a truck on Carvana. Three days ago I was pulled over in my Subaru and the cop told me the plates were registered to my truck. He gave me 2 tickets. I have been unable to drive because Carvana still has not fixed this. My digital glove box on Carvana has all my truck information. I can’t drive the Subaru because they totally unregistered it. The truck is my brothers.
Carvana says they have no idea what happened on their end. They told me they have no idea when it will be resolved. I live in the
