Nationwide - They renewed the pet policy on a deceased pet, not the living pet.
They renewed a pet policy on a deceased pet, while my pets who were still alive the policy was not renewed. When I went to file a claim, they said they could not assist me as the pet I was claiming had no active policy. This happened two years in a row, and as a result I have not been able to file any claims after obtaining pet policies for three different animals. When I asked for a record, they said that the record for my call speaking with a representative was not available. After providing confirmation of payment, I was still denied claim coverage because the customer care representative renewing my policy for the year submitted it for the wrong animal. I am extremely frustrated with the way I have been treated, and would never recommend Nationwide pet insurance to anyone looking for a respectful and accurate insurance representative. Not only will I not receive a refund for the annual policy that they incorrectly filed for the deceased pet, but I am unable to file claims for the veterinary bills that I was submitting in good faith for my living pet. When speaking to the representative to fix the issue, she said I did not understand what she was explaining to me. It was an exceptionally rude experience and she hung up the phone without a thank you or goodbye.
Healthy Paws - BUYER BEWARE - Coverage Drop at Age 7!
Just received my renewal after 10 years of covering our dog since he was a puppy. I've paid the expected rate increases each year. I've held a $250 deductible with 90% reimbursement coverage the entire time.
This year my coverage is being unilaterally changed from a $250 deductible to $500 and the company is reducing reimbursement to 70% and of course they are raising my overall premium despite a significant reduction in coverage.
After talking to customer service - it sounds like the company the company has made a broad decision that all 7+ year old dogs will no longer be eligible for the coverage limits. While young dogs can still sign up for increased coverage, there is a steep drop as your dog ages.
My original thinking was that you select your Pet Insurance while a puppy and keep it consistent. You don't want to have to switch when they get older in case of "preexisting conditions" which create challenges for new coverage. This change backs you into corner. BUYERS PLEASE PROCEED WITH EYES WIDE OPEN.
To Healthy Paws -- you used to be such a great and promising company in this space. This is so disappointing. To the leaders, based on my reading reviews, I'm not the first to have this experience. Your lack of honoring those who have invested in your past success - should have consequences.
Embrace - Frustrating and disappointing process
I really wanted to feel good about having Embrace as protection for my pets, but the experience has been frustrating. The claims process is slow and feels like it takes way too much effort on my end. Communication isn’t always clear, and I’ve had to follow up more than I should just to get simple answers.
While the coverage itself is okay, the amount of stress and time it takes to actually use it makes me question whether it’s worth it. Pet insurance is supposed to give peace of mind, but instead it’s been another source of stress.
Trupanion - Find another animal insurance company. Terrible!
Trupanion used to be a great company, but over the last couple of years, it’s completely changed, and not for the better. I would go as far as saying this company seems like a total scam these days.
I’ve had between 5 and 9 animals insured with them at any given time for the past six years, so I’m not new to this. The premiums have steadily increased across the board, even for puppies I insured early with “locked-in” rates and no pre-existing conditions. I understand prices go up, but the increases have been steep and hard to justify.
What’s really pushed me to write this review, though, is the experience I’ve had recently with one of my cats who’s been seriously ill. Over the last few months, I’ve submitted more than 20 claims related to the same illness, and most of them have either gone unanswered or been categorized in a way that requires me to meet a new deductible each time. This particular cat has a $1,000 deductible, and by constantly splitting his ongoing care into separate issues, Trupanion has effectively avoided covering the majority of his treatment.
Even worse, some of these claims were denied for “missing information” despite the fact that I submitted every piece of documentation they requested—doctor’s notes, receipts, timestamps, everything. I followed up multiple times after resending the materials and still heard nothing back. At this point, I’ve received responses to maybe 5 of the claims I’ve submitted, and only a few have been paid out—neither for amounts that come close to what I’ve spent trying to keep my (young) cat alive and comfortable.
This isn’t just a case of slow service. It feels like they’re actively avoiding payouts. For a company that used to be known for reliability and compassion, it’s been a shocking shift. I run a large animal rescue and used to recommend Trupanion to adopters and friends all the time. I’ve completely stopped doing that. I don’t know if there’s been a change in ownership or internal policy, but something is definitely wrong.
After paying steadily rising premiums for years and only needing help now with one seriously ill animal, it’s heartbreaking to be left without support. I wouldn’t wish this experience on anyone, and I can’t in good conscience recommend Trupanion anymore.
Trupanion - Trupanion Abandoned Us When We Needed Them Most
I’ve had Trupanion for about a year and a half, paying a high monthly premium to make sure my dog would be covered in case of emergencies. Unfortunately, when we needed them most, they completely let us down.
My dog recently had to undergo emergency surgery to remove bladder stones. It was a stressful, heartbreaking situation, and the vet bill came to over $3,000. I filed the claim with Trupanion, expecting that this is exactly the type of serious, urgent medical issue pet insurance is supposed to help with. To my shock, they rejected the claim outright and provided no coverage at all.
Not only was this financially devastating, but it also felt like a betrayal after faithfully paying into their plan for so long. When you’re paying top dollar every month, you expect peace of mind and support in emergencies—not excuses and denials.
I would strongly caution other pet owners to think twice before trusting Trupanion. In my experience, they are not there for you when you and your pet truly need them.
MetLife - Metlife is the WORST!!! NEGATIVE STARS!!!!
I would give negative stars if I could. The absolute WORST!!!! DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!! My mother purchased a policy for puppies. Within less than 60 days afterwards, my mother passed away at the end of March. It took until June to finally gain access and for MetLife to grant me the authority to her account to get the policy transferred to my name so that I could submit claims for services provided for the puppies. The process of submitting claims is not easy. You will need to be sure that your veterinarian gives thorough soap notes as well as an itemized invoice in order to file claims. So if your veterinarian is difficult to work with in this process it will indeed it affect your ability to get reimbursed for the claims. Metlife was far from easy to work with took forever to get me on the policy and then ended up denying the claims because it had gone over the time to submit claims. How convenient for them? When the policy itself states that I should have had the authority to act on my mother's behalf. The claims were still denied regardless of my situation. I would NEVER recommend MetLife Pet insurance. My mother was elderly. Even if she didn't pass away and tried to do this on her own it would have been very difficult and confusing for her to accomplish. She would have most likely just thrown her hands in the air and given up. When you log into your account there's very limited information. There's zero history regarding payment history, communication history, message history, etc. It's very basic. It makes communication with them complicated and confusing. 👎🏼👎🏼
Healthy Paws - New Math invented by Healthy Paws
Yes, honest and helpful.... really ? I have purchased insurance from Healthy Paws when my dog was 5.5 years old ( in 2017): I chose 70% company-30% me, and 500$ deductible. I have paid for 7-8 years, never used it. They don't pay regular visits. I took my baby to ER back in January 2025. After a short visit of few hours the final bill was $1000. My deductible was $500, so then they should have paid 70% according with my plan. They said they don't pay the visit ( $250), so I was left with 250$ bill hoping to get 70% which means $175.00... well Healthy Paws invented a new Math and sent me a check of $46. Please be aware they do not cover the percentage they said !!!!
For Healthy Paws: I am not interested in your excuses and explanations !! Math is Math: you should post your percentage rule on your site so people are aware of this scam ! I have stopped paying the insurance. My baby is 13.5, still doing good. I have meant to write a review for very long time. I also want to bring to attention the increasing of cost is astronomical !!!! I have read reviews that say the increase was above like 1000 %.
They want you to pay , but they always find excuses not to cover !!!!
Trupanion - You nickle and dime your customers
You nickle and dime your customers - even long-term customers yet raise our rates every year blaming it on veterinary charges going up. This is a joke and a scam
Nationwide - Never got anymore information after I…
Never got anymore information after I paid almost $70 to start the insurance for my cat. Total rip off.
Figo - I insured my pet through FIGO when it…
I insured my pet through FIGO when it came time for a claim FIGO did everything they could to discount the claim including asking for the same records over and over again. If you want the false feeling of doing the right thing throw your money away with FIGO! Remember this is an insurance company looking out for profits not you or your pets best interests.
